Experts' Meeting between DBAR and PEEX

On March 31, experts from the Digital Belt and Road Program (DBAR) and Pan-Eurasian Experiment Program (PEEX) held an online meeting on “coordinated, comprehensive, long-term in situ components of land-atmosphere measurements for complementing space borne Earth observation”. Colleagues from DBAR under the International Research Center of Big Data for Sustainable Development Goals (CBAS) and the Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR) and PEEX at the University of Helsinki also attended the meeting.

Prof. Guo Huadong, Chair of DBAR, and Prof. Markku Kulmala, Chair of PEEX, led the discussions during the meeting and gave opening presentations introducing the activities of their respective programs. The meeting aimed to give an overview of CBAS-INAR and DBAR-PEEX observation activities. The agenda of the meeting focused on introducing CBAS and its research activities, the ongoing activities at DBAR, giga city observations; Arctic SDGs addressed by big data, studies on vegetation of the Earth’s three poles, Big Earth Data for SDG 13 INAR Asian collaboration activities, Arctic dataset-products for research, stakeholders and end-user communities Arctic research, Svalbard collaboration, and SMEAR-I (Station for Measuring Atmosphere-Ecosystem Relations) Värriö station observations.

The meeting also discussed opportunities for near future and long-term collaboration between CBAS and INAR, including plans for a joint workshop focusing on in-situ and remote sensing observations data to facilitate SDGs with a particular focus on SDG-13. Also discussed were plans for a joint workshop on data in May 2022 and a joint workshop on SDG-13 in Sep 2022, topics for joint papers on bridging current observation activities, and joint research on inter comparison between in-situ and satellite observations, especially for SDGs, Arctic station connections and experiments.
